Create helps artists to connect with communities by delivering large-scale art, architecture, design and theatre projects in places that people walk past every day.
They have transformed spaces including The Rose Lipman Building (formerly the Hackney Archives and Library), a disused undercroft on the A12 motorway, parks, playgrounds and rooftops. By taking art out of galleries, Create helps artists deliver projects that actively involve local communities.
Create Director Hadrian Garrard explains: “If you get out there and spend time (sometimes years) as part of a community, you can start sharing ideas and approaches that change people’s lives, which is so much more rewarding than running an outreach programme out of the back door of an art gallery.”
